Chicago vs. Minneapolis..?

I'm planning on moving in a few months and I really don't know which city to pick. I've posted a few questions already about Minneapolis but im still torn. Right now I live in New York, so Chicago would feel right at home. But on the other hand Minneapolis is much safer, but it seems Minneapolis may be too relaxed and not exciting as what im use to. With NYC I pretty much know all the bad areas and where not to go, since I basically grew up here. But i've heard storys of people being shot & killed in the middle of the day in Chicago randomly. My question is; What are good & bad areas of Chicago, & is it safer than it sounds?
